Description
This section of the branch begins at El Mentidero, in the hamlet of Taibique. The place owes its name to a long stone bench that once stood here, where the village elders would gather to chat, exchange stories, and boast a little. Today, a bar with the same name remains as a reminder of that traditional meeting spot.
The path continues along El Roque Street, named after a prominent rock formation that can be seen on the right-hand side about 150 meters from the start. It juts out from the slopes of Tanajara Volcano and is actually a secondary vent of that volcanic system. To the left rises Mount Gurugú, topped by a wooden cross. In the local dialect of El Hierro, the word "gurugú" means a gathering of people—an idea that, interestingly, echoes the meaning of "mentidero".
Along this section, walkers can admire old traditional houses, built with dry-stone walls and tiled roofs. Some have been restored, while others lie in ruins, interspersed with more recent constructions. Together, they form a landscape where heritage and modern life blend seamlessly, adding depth and character to the trail.
